Ano Syros
Ano Syros or Apano Ηora, as the locals call it (meaning Upper Syros or Upper Town), is the old city, the medieval settlement of the island which has been amphitheatrically built on the hill top. The church of St. George, an aisled Basilica stands imposingly on top of the hill since 1598 and the Centre of Historical Studies of the Syros Catholic Diocese. Stroll around the narrow cobbled streets of the town and enjoy the shaded coolness. Throughout the settlement one can find tavernas serving traditional dishes and local wine and delicacies.
One can enjoy hot and cold drinks or sweets in one of the tastefully decorated coffee shops. Admire the breathtaking views of the port of Syros and the surrounding islands. Stroll through the Piazza (the center of Ano Syros) and choose a hand-made present for you and your friends from locally produced gift shops.
